U7L4 Cantonese grammar 喎 [wo3/wo4/wo5]

In this lesson, the grammar of 喎 [wo3/wo4/wo5] in Cantonese will be introduced.  Particle(助詞)喎 [wo3/wo4/wo5] can only be used in imperative sentence(祈使句).  It is used to make a suggestion indirectly by restating a fact that the speakers have previously seen, heard, felt or experienced.  The meanings of 喎 would change depending on its tone and you should not mix those usages up.

Usage for 喎 [wo5] in Cantonese grammar

Particle 喎 [wo5] is used when you are restating something you have previously seen, heard, felt or experienced.  The restating statement can be originated from something non-verbal felt or experienced by the speaker.

keoi5 waa6 keoi5 m4 sik1 gong2 gwong2 dung1 waa2 wo5

佢話佢唔識講廣東話喎。

He said that he does not speak Cantonese.

喎 [wo3] is used to express your disagreement and refute what was believed by the listener while restating what you have previously seen, heard, felt or experienced.  Context is crucial for understanding this particle.

喎 [wo4] is used to express your surprise while restating what you have previously seen, heard or experienced; the surprise here possesses a negative nuance which the speaker does not believe that is possible to happen.
