U7L6 Cantonese grammar 罷啦 [baa2 laa1]

In this lesson, the grammar of particle(助詞) 罷啦 [baa2 laa1] in Cantonese will be introduced.  罷啦 [baa2 laa1] is a particle with two syllables.  The rules for using 罷啦 is very strict.  First of all, the subject of sentence described by 罷啦 has to be a human that can do something consciously.

Secondly, the predicate of sentences described by 罷啦 has to be a verb, instead of a noun or an adjective, and it has to be done intentionally by the subject.

Thirdly, sentences described by 罷啦 cannot be described by any predicative suffix except 咗 [zo2].

Usage 1 of 罷啦 [baa2 laa1] in Cantonese grammar

When 罷啦[baa2 laa1] is attached to an imperative sentence(祈使句), it expresses a nuance of persuading the listener to accept an advice proposed by the speaker.

Nei5 syun3 baa2 laa1

你算罷啦。

Just give up.

Usage 2 of 罷啦 [baa2 laa1] in Cantonese grammar

When the subject is the speaker himself, 罷啦 is used to suggest something to be done by the speaker himself for the listener; that suggestion possesses a decisive nuance which no further discussion is wanted by the speaker.

 ngo5 sai2 wun2 baa2 laa1

我洗碗罷啦。

I will do the dishes (I have decided this and don’t argue with me).
